The "Illogical Investment"

Melanie and I Enjoying a Beautiful Day on False River

My name is Jeff Cobb, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  I recently completed building the Glen-L Marine designed "Squirt" runabout which I named "Illogical Investment".  It's a small two seater outboard pleasure boat.  I started the project in mid August 2007 and had hoped to have the boat in the water by the summer of 2008.  That didn't happen, but I finally launched the boat on May 31, 2009.

With the vintage 1956 Johnson 15hp motor, the boat performed well with one adult.  It planed and ran at 20 mph according to GPS.  It would not plane with two male adults (approximately 200 pounds each) in the boat; so, I moved the battery and fuel tank forward of the seating area.  Now, the boat sits really nice and level in the water.  The boat planes and rides well; however, over the next few months I plan to restore a 1957 Johnson Javelin and see how the boat handles a heavier and more powerful motor.  The boat surprisingly takes on wakes and chop well considering its small size.  On a windy choppy day, you can plan on getting a little wet, but that's just part of the fun.

This is the first and only boat I've ever built; and honestly, I doubt I would have even attempted this project prior to the existence of the internet.  Being able to view photos and glean information from the websites of other boat builders made accomplishment of this project much more feasible.  My intentions were to keep up this website as I built so that it would be as informative as possible for other builders.  Well, I got too tied up in the actual boat building to do this.  Now, after the fact, I'll be adding some of my numerous pictures along with descriptions of what I'm trying to show in them.  Fellow boatbuilders, I hope the site is helpful to you.
